Gavilan Basketball Players Injured in Car Accident

In a tragic car accident on US Highway 101 at 1:30AM on Sunday three Gavilan College basketball players and two female companions were injured. The injured players are Andrel Gaines, Devontea Johnson, and Billy Heard who was driving the car.

The three players and the two young ladies were heading home from a club in San Francisco in a black Cadillac driven by Heard. He spotted a tire in the road a swerved to avoid it causing him to hit a median. The car spun out of control ending up facing the wrong direction on the highway. Their car was then struck head-on by another vehicle.

Billy Heard was arrested at the scene for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol before being sent on to the hospital for treatment of his injuries. Test results have not been made public since the investigation is still ongoing.

Andrel Gaines Battling for Life

Andrel Gaines sustained severe head injuries and is not expected to survive. As of the latest public update he is on life support with family in attendance. Devontea Johnson sustained a broken leg in the accident and is being treated at Stanford University Medical. The two young ladies, Denise Bravo and Razelyn Ambrocio, sustained only minor injuries.

In a strange twist of fate, Billy Heard was not even in the car when the head on collision occurred. He had exited the car after the spin-out prior to the red Nissan 300ZX smashed head first into the Cadillac. The driver of the 300ZX, Dennis Leffew, sustained major injuries and is being treated at Stanford Medical Center, also. Dennis was arrested at the scene of the accident for suspicion of DUI, also.

Legal Complications of the Dual Accident

This dual accident creates an interesting twist to the police investigation. With Andrel Gaines not expected to survive his injuries felony DUI charges could be filed against both Dennis Leffew and Billy Heard. Which driver is ultimately responsible for the death and accident will need to be determined by the police investigation and forthcoming trials. It may take months of legal discussions between accident lawyers, criminal defense attorneys, prosecutors, and investigators to unravel this case.

This accident provides another twist being faced by all of the victims. They may be faced with insurance companies hesitating to pay for damages and medical claims as the investigations are underway. In these types of cases it is best for each victim to consult with an auto accident attorney to protect their interests and make sure their expenses are covered.

The accident is devastating to the entire Gavilan College community and especially the basketball team who was preparing for their season opener this week Thursday. It is uncertain whether the team will choose to continue with their opening game or request a postponement.

Please extend your thought and prayers for all of the victims and their families during this extremely challenging time. This tragic combination of two accidents is a grim reminder of the dangers of driving under the influence. Hopefully this reminder will prevent other drivers from taking the same unnecessary risks.
